Silver Rapids Indoor Waterpark opens

By LAUREN TANDY
Special to the News-Press

Ski on the mountain, surf at the lodge this weekend KELLOGG – This weekend marks the grand opening of Silver Rapids Indoor Waterpark at Silver Mountain, qualifying the destination as a year-round resort with The new park adds the thrills of surfing, sliding, tubing, and other wet and wild fun to the high country.

With plenty of snow still on the mountain, resort-goers will be able to ski on the mountain during the day Saturday and come down to surf the waterpark by night.

“It began with the construction of the ski hill, then condominium lodging in the Gondola Village in 2004 and is coming to fruition and is being completed with the opening of Silver Rapids Waterpark,” said Neal Scholey, Silver Mountain Resort Real Estate Sales Manager.

The new waterpark is nearly the size of a football field. It includes body and tube slides, skylight, a lazy river, family raft slide, kid’s activity lagoon, and the ultimate in aquatic attractions – a FlowRider Surf Wave. In just 10 seconds, 10,000 gallons of surging water is released into the FlowRider’s wave box, combining the thrills of surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding all in a wet, wild, and – best of all – safe environment. The FlowRider is covered in foam padding so that when a surfer loses the wave, the wipe-out is cushioned.

Open year-round, Silver Rapids will provide endless aquatic fun, along with Silver Mountain’s other multi-season activities. Silver Rapids is the first of its kind at a ski resort in the Western United States, Scholey said.

“The evolution continued last year with the beginning of construction of the Galena Ridge Phase I,” Scholey said, “Planned to be an 18-hole championship golf community, this year rounds out the destination resort atmosphere with the waterpark and planned golf amenities for our guests.”

Features will include: Cub Cove, an interactive spray deck just for toddlers with a variety of wet, watery spray fountains, bubblers and misters; Pollywog Pond, which is more wet fun for the youngsters. This is a shallow water pool with two kiddy slides and a bungee swing;

FlowRider: The FlowRider is the perfect wave, a continuous one that can be body-boarded or surfed. Over 60,000 gallons of water per minute flows at 35 miles per hour. The surfer is actually standing still but the moving water underneath gives the illusion of moving along at a 35 mile per hour clip;
North Fork Adventure River: The North Fork Adventure River surrounds Minor’s Island and is a 315-foot lazy river that slowly floats tubers and swimmers around the park at a leisurely pace; Moose Sluice: Moose Sluice (family raft ride) is a fast, twisting, turning waterslide that the whole family can enjoy together in a 6-foot diameter inflated raft;
Warm Spring Spa: The Warm Spring Spa is located right next to the lazy river, where all of the action is;
Gold Rush and Prospector Plunge: Gold Rush and Prospector Plunge are two 54-inch diameter enclosed fiberglass tube slides that can be ridden in either a single or a double 48-inch inner tube; Minor’s Island is truly an adventure island that you have to cross one of the two bridges to access. It is a multi-level play structure with many interactive valves and spraying opportunities to get everyone wet. It comes complete with a giant tipping bucket and two body flume water slides racing off the back;
Hoop Lagoon, which is an activity pool complete with basketball hoops and a watery, 3-foot-deep, 84-degree court;
The Crossing: Next to Hoop Lagoon, it is complete with floating lily pad obstacles that the nimble-footed can cross with the help from the overhead cargo net; Trestles is the bar overlooking the waterpark on the second floor mezzanine. Visitors can soak in a hot tub or enjoy a cool drink while watching the FlowRider.

A family of four can stay at the Morning Star Lodge for a Grand Opening Special of $199 per night. For information on this or other resort real estate opportunities, call (800) 305-7669 or email
